About the Instrument
This large viola has a commanding, supple sound and is an excellent instrument for solo or orchestral playing. It has a beautiful dark red varnish with golden ground. The back is two-piece with flame very slightly slanted upwards towards the bouts with thoughtful antiquing by the makers.

About the Makers
Anton D. Voit (b. Voigt, 1882-1952) was born in Germany into a dynasty of luthiers dating back to the 18th century in Neukirchen. Voit trained under Karl Voigt, his luthier father before immigrating to the United States in 1913. He worked for several shops, where he specialized in repair. In 1915, Voit worked under Carl Fischer in Chicago, followed by Rudolph Wurlitzer, then William Lewis & Son. In 1923, Voit established his Chicago shop with the American luthier Leroy Geiger.
Leroy F. Geiger (1900-1960) was an American instrument maker who began making violins in Grinnel, Iowa before working for Carl G. Becker from at William Lewis & Son. Geiger was a contemporary of Frank Sindelar and Carl G. Becker, all three of whom studied under John Hornsteiner III. Geiger subsequently worked in Hornsteiner’s shop, then at William Lewis & Son. Upon Hornsteiner’s death, Geiger left to open an atelier with Voit. Before his death, Geiger moved to Los Angeles.
