William Whedbee violin, 1988, Chicago USA

William Whedbee violin, 1988, Chicago USA

A Modern American Violin by William Whedbee, 1988 Chicago
Radiant, resonant, adaptable

American luthier William Whedbee followed his combined interest in music and woodworking to study in Cremona at the Institute of Violin Making. In 1979, Whedbee moved back to Chicago at the invitation of William Harris Lee and established his private workshop thereafter. This particular violin is an example of Whedbee’s excellent craftsmanship.

The back is two piece quarter-cut maple, with beautiful narrow flame that angles slightly downward from the center joint. The narrow vertical grain of the two piece spruce top is uniquely prominent, and showcases the craftsmanship of the instrument. This is also evident in the finely carved f-holes and the tasteful orange-brown varnish that highlights the quality wood chosen for the instrument. There is some tasteful shading as well as some patina added to the surface, an indication of Whedbee’s intensive study of his craft. This knowledge is also evident in the instrument’s sound. It is very comfortable to play, with atone that is easily adaptable. While being pleasantly radiant under the ear, it also displays a lovely resonance.

The label reads “William Whedbee IN, Chicago 1988” with a second smaller label simply bearing the number “309”. The violin is in excellent condition.
